Kill Variance. Print Yield.

Every cycle your facility runs on legacy HPS infrastructure, the variance tax compounds silently. Lamp lumen depreciation begins at first strike and never reverses. Ballast-driven heat loads force HVAC systems to compensate for thermal output that contributes nothing to photosynthesis. Manual control dead zones — the hours between scheduled checks when no one is watching the canopy — accumulate into measurable yield inconsistency across benches, rooms, and harvest cycles. The enemy is not a single failure point; it is a system of passive degradation that makes every harvest slightly different from the last, and never in your favor.

After deployment, the facility operates on a different logic. Every fixture in the array delivers the same photon flux at the same spectral distribution on day one and on day 75,000 of rated operation. Scheduling runs through a 0–10V control architecture that executes dim-to-off sequences without manual intervention. Cooling loads drop 40–60% compared to HPS equivalents, freeing HVAC capacity for environmental precision rather than thermal damage control. Canopy density becomes a documented output, not a variable. Harvest weight per square foot becomes a number you can plan around.

The mechanism behind that outcome is a 224-diode array sourced from Seoul and Osram, operating at 500 watts across the Phyto-Genesis Spectrum® (350–750 nm) — a Beyond PAR™ spectral platform that includes 3% UV content for secondary metabolite expression and near-infrared for Emerson Effect activation. Photon flux output reaches 1,062 PBAR µmol/s at 2.14 µmol/J PBAR efficacy, delivered through glass lenses rated at greater than 99.5% transmissivity. Redundant active cooling fans and oversized heatsinks maintain thermal stability without passive failure risk, and an automatic over-temperature shut-off provides a hard safety floor. The 0–10V dimming interface supports 15%–100% output range with dim-to-off capability, enabling full integration with commercial environmental controllers. Power factor is 0.99 across a 100–277V input range (8SC) or 100–250V (8SP), with 94% efficient modular LED drivers. In practical terms, the PhytoMAX-4 8S delivers 1,062 PBAR µmol/s at 2.14 µmol/J efficacy from a 15" x 15" x 4.5" fixture drawing 500 watts and dissipating 1,705 BTU/hr.

Where This Belongs (and Doesn't)

Not recommended for circuits under ~4.17A @120V or ~2.08A @240V per fixture, or unsealed rooms lacking HVAC capacity for expected thermal load.

This fixture requires a dedicated 20A circuit minimum at 120V or appropriate breaker sizing for 208–277V three-phase installations. HVAC capacity must be sized to manage 1,705 BTU/hr per unit at full output. Verify electrical infrastructure before ordering.

  • High-DLI production cycles requiring spectral targeting across veg and flower phases
  • Veg coverage: Not specified in source data — contact manufacturer for canopy mapping
  • Flower coverage: Sized for commercial canopy footprints — contact Black Dog LED or Cannafull Spectrum Solutions for site-specific layout
  • Operations integrating 0–10V environmental control systems
  • Facilities replacing 1000W DE HPS with thermally efficient LED infrastructure

Not Recommended For

  • Greenhouse installations using the 8SP variant (IEC cord; not rated for greenhouse environments)
  • Facilities without dedicated circuit capacity for 500W continuous draw per fixture
  • Operations without HVAC infrastructure capable of managing 1,705 BTU/hr per unit
  • Environments where 0–10V controller integration is not available or planned

Infrastructure Note: The 8SC variant (SKU BD001-0110) features a locking, water-tight power cord rated for 100–277V and is suitable for sealed room and greenhouse-adjacent installations. The 8SP variant (SKU BD001-0103) uses a standard IEC power cord rated for 100–250V and is explicitly not recommended for greenhouse use. Confirm variant selection against your facility's electrical and environmental specifications before purchase.

How It Works

The PhytoMAX-4 8S is built around a 224-diode array drawing from eight distinct color and wavelength channels sourced from Seoul Semiconductor and Osram — two of the highest-specification LED suppliers in commercial horticulture. This multi-channel architecture is what defines the Phyto-Genesis Spectrum® (Beyond PAR™), a spectral platform spanning 350–750 nm that extends meaningfully beyond the 400–700 nm PAR window used as the baseline for conventional fixture comparisons. The 3% UV content within that range drives secondary metabolite expression — including cannabinoid and terpene accumulation — with lab-tested results showing a 39% increase in cannabinoid content compared to non-UV-inclusive lighting platforms. Near-infrared output activates the Emerson Effect, extending photosynthetic efficiency at the far-red boundary of the spectrum.

Photon delivery is managed through glass lenses rated at greater than 99.5% transmissivity, ensuring that diode output reaches the canopy with minimal optical loss. Thermal management is handled by redundant active cooling fans paired with oversized heatsinks — a dual-path system that eliminates the single-point failure risk of passive-only thermal designs. An automatic over-temperature shut-off provides a hard operational ceiling, protecting both the fixture and the crop in the event of ambient temperature excursion. The 94% efficient modular LED drivers maintain a 0.99 power factor across the full input voltage range, minimizing reactive power draw on facility electrical infrastructure.

Control integration operates via a 0–10V signal interface supporting 15%–100% dimming range with full dim-to-off capability, enabling the fixture to participate in automated scheduling, sunrise/sunset ramping, and multi-zone control architectures without manual intervention. The 8-foot cord length provides installation flexibility in standard commercial racking configurations, and the 15" x 15" x 4.5" form factor at 26 lbs is compatible with standard commercial grow room hanging hardware. In practical terms, the PhytoMAX-4 8S delivers 1,062 PBAR µmol/s across the Phyto-Genesis Spectrum® (350–750 nm) at 2.14 µmol/J PBAR efficacy, drawing 500 watts and dissipating 1,705 BTU/hr from a fixture weighing 26 lbs.

Operator Field Note

  • Structural Load: Each PhytoMAX-4 8S weighs 26 lbs. For multi-fixture arrays, calculate total ceiling or racking load before installation. Use hardware rated to at least double the fixture weight per mount point.
  • Electrical Draw: 500W continuous per fixture. At 120V, this draws approximately 4.2A; at 240V, approximately 2.1A. Apply NEC 80% continuous load derating when sizing circuits — do not exceed 16A per 20A breaker for 120V installations. Consult a licensed electrician for multi-fixture runs.
  • UV Exposure Warning: The Phyto-Genesis Spectrum® includes 3% UV output (350–400 nm range). Do not view the fixture directly when operating. Use UV-blocking eyewear rated for 350–400 nm when working in the room with fixtures at full output. Limit unprotected skin exposure during extended maintenance periods.
  • Thermal Setpoint: Manufacturer recommends 85°F ambient as the optimal Leaf Surface Temperature (LST) setpoint. Deviating significantly below this setpoint may reduce photosynthetic efficiency; exceeding it without adequate airflow risks heat stress. Calibrate HVAC control loops to this target before first production cycle.
  • Variant Cord Compatibility: The 8SC variant uses a locking, water-tight cord (100–277V). The 8SP uses a standard IEC cord (100–250V). Confirm outlet type and voltage range match your selected variant before installation. Mismatched cord types cannot be field-swapped.
  • Over-Temperature Protection: The fixture includes automatic over-temperature shut-off. If a unit shuts off unexpectedly, do not immediately restart. Allow the fixture to cool, verify ambient temperature and airflow, and identify the thermal cause before resuming operation.

Operator FAQ

Q: What circuit amperage is required per fixture, and how many units can share a single circuit?

A: Each PhytoMAX-4 8S draws 500W continuously. At 120V, that is approximately 4.2A per fixture; at 240V, approximately 2.1A. Under NEC continuous load rules, a 20A/120V circuit should not exceed 16A of continuous load — meaning a maximum of three fixtures per 20A/120V circuit with margin. At 240V, circuit capacity increases proportionally. For 208–277V three-phase installations using the 8SC variant, consult a licensed electrician to size conductors and breakers for your specific panel configuration. Always apply the 80% derating rule for continuous loads.

Q: What controllers are compatible, and what dimming modes does the fixture support?

A: The PhytoMAX-4 8S uses a 0–10V analog dimming interface, which is compatible with the majority of commercial environmental controllers that output a 0–10V signal. The fixture supports a 15%–100% dimming range with full dim-to-off capability, enabling automated sunrise/sunset ramping, multi-zone scheduling, and DLI-targeted daily light integral management. Confirm that your controller outputs a true 0–10V signal (not PWM or 1–10V) before integration. Contact Cannafull Spectrum Solutions at (888) 378-0017 or sales@cannafullspec.com if you need compatibility verification for a specific controller model.

Q: What is the recommended mounting height for this fixture?

A: Black Dog LED does not publish a single universal mounting height for the PhytoMAX-4 8S, as optimal hang height depends on canopy target PPFD, room dimensions, and reflectivity. Black Dog LED provides canopy mapping support for commercial deployments. Contact Cannafull Spectrum Solutions at (888) 378-0017 or sales@cannafullspec.com to request a layout recommendation for your specific room dimensions and target DLI. As a general commercial practice, start at 18–24 inches above canopy and adjust based on measured PPFD at canopy level using a calibrated quantum sensor.

Q: What are the coverage dimensions for vegetative and flowering phases?

A: Specific vegetative and flowering coverage dimensions for the PhytoMAX-4 8S are not published in the manufacturer's standard specification table. Black Dog LED provides site-specific canopy mapping for commercial deployments based on room dimensions, target PPFD, and mounting height. Contact Cannafull Spectrum Solutions at (888) 378-0017 or sales@cannafullspec.com to request a coverage layout for your facility. The manufacturer reports yield efficiency of 80–120+ grams per sq. ft. under optimized deployment conditions.

Q: What is the rated lifespan, and what maintenance does the fixture require over its operational life?

A: The PhytoMAX-4 8S is rated for greater than 75,000 hours of operation per manufacturer specification. Unlike HPS infrastructure, there are no lamp replacement cycles, no ballast rebuilds, and no scheduled re-lamping costs built into the operational budget. Routine maintenance is limited to periodic inspection of the active cooling fans for dust accumulation and verification that airflow paths around the fixture are unobstructed. The automatic over-temperature shut-off provides a diagnostic signal if thermal management is compromised. No consumable components require scheduled replacement under normal operating conditions.

Q: What does the warranty cover, and how do I initiate a claim through Cannafull Spectrum Solutions?

A: The PhytoMAX-4 8S carries a 5-year manufacturer warranty against defects in materials and workmanship. Additionally, Black Dog LED offers a no-risk 90-day money-back guarantee. To initiate a warranty claim or return, contact Cannafull Spectrum Solutions directly at (888) 378-0017 or sales@cannafullspec.com. A Return Authorization (RA) number is required before any unit is shipped back — do not return a fixture without an RA.
